Senior capstone

  • Independent project (research, ideation, production)

    Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD

Mixed media (linocut printmaking, collaging, paper manipulation, etc.)

    Completed Fall 2022

  • This project is my Senior capstone, which includes a wide range of deliverables. For this project, I wanted to explore the movie industry and the world of prop design. The deliverables for this project include the Impropable identity, digital/print marketing, interactive media, and retail products.

  • Behind every great movie or show there is a team of actors, writers, videographers, producers, and more. However, there is one group that can be easily overlooked, the designers. These individuals have the ability to make a foreign world and atmosphere appear authentic. In other words, who create the little details, that may be missed within a film or show, pushing the idea and story further to transport the audience to a different world. Impropable is a small prop design company that is based out of Marietta, Georgia with approximately forty employees. At Impropable, designers create generalized mystery/sci-fi/horror props for film and tv. This company was created to allow the film industry easy access to specially designed props. At Impropable, film production companies can directly buy multiple products that range throughout specific time periods. Impropable’s goal is to be the missing piece that makes an artwork feel complete. Within any aspect of creating art, there is a point where the final product may seem incomplete. This is where Impropable shines, with film ready products that are easy to find.

Inspiration + Sketches

During my initial research, there were a few different routes I was gravitating towards. I was looking into horror, retro futurism, modern futurism, and a retro sort of 80s design aesthetic. I wanted to combine all of these, in a sense that I would be creating a sort of modern retro futurism feel for the overall identity of the company. I wanted to combine these aesthetics because I wanted the company to feel like it could accomplish both, that feeling like your favorite classic movie while also being transformed into the next generation.

I decided to explore using the Mobius strip, which is a shape with only one side. I thought the reference to Marvel’s Endgame, where Iron man discovers that the Mobius strip is a timeline for past/future time travel. I thought that this was a great representation of what Impropable strived to portray, through its props.

Identity

Prop Products

This part of the project I wanted to be experimental, testing different media formats, textures, paper aging, etc. I did not do much sketching for the prop portion because I wanted to focus more on the physical manipulations of the products rather than the actual content. Above you can find more of my experimentation process that was not only used for the products but was also used for the company logo and additional assets.
